Selection is made on merit alone, and no payment is expected or accepted for inclusion of any artist's work. Every effort will be made to return in due course rejected MSS., and all photographs, etc., rejected or accepted; but in no circumstances can the Editor hold himself responsible for the safe custody or return of such material. Artists and others are urged to submit photographs in the first instance, rather than originals. These should be addressed to "The Editor." Stamps for return should always be sent, and the name and address of the sender must be clearly written on every MS., photograph, etc. All notes and articles should be typewritten. Contributions and specimens of work submitted by hand must be left for consideration at "The Studio" Office for a day or two. The Editor and Editorial Staff CANNOT GIVE INTERVIEWS, except by appointment, for which some definite reason must be adduced. THE STUDIO CRAFTSMANSHIP BEFORE the age of the machine, the world, and especially Great Britain, was full of craftsmen; men who could handle the tools of their trade, whose interest was in their work and whose pride was in the creation of their own hands. There was, too, a personal element and a common bond between employer and employed which created sympathy, mutual understanding and goodwill. The machine has changed all that. Gone is the personal bond between employer and employed. Gone is the craftsman, with his pride of production, and in his place we have made a nation of machine-minders, whose work is for the most part purely mechanical, like that of the man from Ford’s in the well-known yarn, whose job it was to screw up nut number so-and-so. Is not this the cause, at any rate, of some of the prevailing unrest? It is impossible to arouse enthusiasm for a mechanical routine action which does not call for the exercise of mind as well as hand. Thus the mind becomes stale for want of occupation, and the hands unskilled for lack of use. Stimulants in the form of purchased entertainment are unprofitably sought as a means of killing the resultant boredom and restlessness. The age of machinery is an accomplished fact, and we cannot go back. New discoveries and competition press us ever onward. Is not this a reason for striving to promote interest in and appreciation of the arts and crafts? By so doing we provide an alternative to soul-destroying routine, we stimulate the search for beauty in everyday things, we encourage the routine worker to emulate the craftsman in the use of mind and hand, and in so doing we promote the dignity of labour, we make it possible to find amusement and recreation from within ourselves, we counteract unrest, and promote national and international fellowship and goodwill.
