Selection is made on merit alone, and no payment is expected or accepted for inclusion of any artist's work. Every effort will be made to return in due course rejected MSS., and all photographs, etc., rejected or accepted; but in no circumstances can the Editor hold himself responsible for the safe custody or return of such material. Artists and others are urged to submit photographs in the first instance, rather than originals. These should be addressed to "The Editor." Stamps for return should always be sent, and the name and address of the sender must be clearly written on every MS., photograph, etc. All notes and articles should be typewritten. Contributions and specimens of work submitted by hand must be left for consideration at "The Studio" Office for a day or two. The Editor and Editorial Staff CANNOT GIVE INTERVIEWS, except by appointment, for which some definite reason must be adduced. Callers are recommended to leave a concise statement of their business in writing. The Health and Cleanliness Council offer £100 for The Best Design for a 16-sheet POSTER --- REGULATIONS. (a) The designs may be on sheets smaller than 16-sheet but to scale and must be such as would suitably enlarge to 16-sheet size. (b) The designs may be the unaided entry of one artist, or, if desired, the combined production of one or more persons, e.g., the result of co-operation between an artist or artists and a health publicity specialist. (c) Artists may enter one or more designs, but each entry must be sent in separately and under cover of a nom de plume. In the event of more than one entry being sent in, each must have a separate nom de plume and be accompanied by a sealed envelope bearing on the outside the nom de plume and enclosing the name and address of the artist, together with nom de plume. (d) Designs must reach the Health and Cleanliness Council, 5, Tavistock Square, London, W.C.1, on or before Wednesday, 10th August, 1927. P.T.O.

(e) The Health and Cleanliness Council reserve the right to publish any poster entered for this Competition, paying a mutually agreed fee to the artist in the event of such publication, the copyright of such publications and of the prize-winning design to be the property of the Health and Cleanliness Council. (f) The Prize-winning Poster will be printed by the Health and Cleanliness Council for display during Health Week, October 2nd to 10th, 1927. (g) The Health and Cleanliness Council reserve the right to make a lower award or awards in the event of none of the entries in the opinion of the Adjudication Committee reaching a high enough standard of merit to warrant the award of £100. THE STUDIO The most joyous Hobby. By Percy V. Bradshaw. (Founder and Principal of the Press Art School). I want to talk quietly and sincerely to those who are seeking a cheery, happy, profitable way of spending leisure hours—a Hobby that will give the return in self-improvement and joy that a Hobby should. To them I suggest Drawing. There is no Hobby to equal it. Its cost is very little, an important point when choosing a Hobby. And, as one progresses, it is found that subjects producing joy and interest abound—in Summer’s shine and Winter’s snow alike. You might say, “Yes—but Drawing is a Gift, and few people have it.” I would reply that, like writing, it can be taught. In fact, Drawing was the earliest form of writing. My calling has given me friendly contact with a large number of successful Artists. I do not know one who was “born to it.” All had to train, to learn, to study. If you have never drawn a line, but have the wish and the will to learn, I can teach you in a way that is pleasant, joyous even, from the very beginning. You will start with simple outlines from Nature and pass gradually to subjects calling for more skill. By and by, you will be doing sketches of things about the house, your pets and ornaments, until, almost unconsciously, you will find yourself doing happy little character studies of Brother Bill, Uncle George, and so on. As your Hobby develops, life and the world will seem so much more worth while. I have taught Drawing by Post to several thousands of people, at home and abroad, since 1905, when I started the Press Art School. Many of the leading Illustrators of to-day are my old Pupils—upwards of a thousand sketches by old Pupils have appeared in “Punch” alone. If Drawing interests you, as a Hobby or as a Career, send for my Prospectus. It explains everything about my Postal Courses, and what they have done.
