RULES OF 'THE STUDIO' INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. (1) All purchasers of THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs and Compositions must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings, &c., submitted for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only, and must be accompanied by the Coupon given on page xvii., duly filled in and signed. Such coupon must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. This envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes if the rules of the Competition have not been complied with, or if in the opinion of the judges the drawings, &c., are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO, or any Extra Number of it, at such a time as he thinks fit, any of the drawings, designs, photographs and other works submitted. Subject to this, the copyright in such drawings, &c., belongs (unless otherwise stated or implied in the announcement) to the competitors sending them, and they are free to dispose of them as they like. (5) All Drawings, &c., including those to which prizes have been awarded (unless otherwise stated), will be returned to Competitors at their own risk as soon as possible after publication of the awards, provided sufficient stamps are sent in the envelope containing the coupon to cover postage or carriage and packing—the minimum in all cases being sixpence. Colonial and foreign stamps will be accepted. (6) All drawings, prints, &c., must be claimed within one month after the publication of the awards (except those sent from remote countries, for which a period of four months will be allowed), failing which they may be disposed of as the Proprietor of THE STUDIO thinks fit. He will under no circumstances hold himself responsible for the loss or damage of any drawings, photographs, &c., in whatever way such loss or damage may arise. (7) All drawings, &c., must be sent in packed flat, except where otherwise expressly stated. (8) All designs, drawings, prints, &c., and correspondence thereon to be addressed THE STUDIO, 44 Leicester Square, London, W.C., and marked "Prize Competitions," with the number of the Competition on the outside of the package or letter referring to it. (9) An infringement of any of the above Rules will disqualify a Competitor, and the decision of the Editor shall be final on all questions arising thereunder. CLASS A. DECORATIVE ART. A XLII. (Particulars of the above appeared in the January, February and March Numbers respectively.) A XLVI. DESIGN FOR THE FRONT COVER OF "THE JOURNAL OF THE GYPSY LORE SOCIETY." The size of the Journal will be 6 inches by 10 inches, and the design will be printed in black ink on coloured paper. The words, "Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society," should be incorporated in the design, and spaces must be left, either in the block or in the margins, for "Vol. ......." "No. .......", "Month," "Year," "Printer's name and address." A large space may be provided, if desired, for "Contents." Appropriate symbols are—(1) the water wagtail, (2) the hedgehog, (3) Gypsy (not military) tents, and (4) caravans; but their use is optional. FIRST PRIZE: Three Guineas; SECOND PRIZE: Two Guineas. Prize designs to become the absolute property of the Hon. Sec., Gypsy Lore Society, 6 Hope Place, Liverpool; who also reserves the right to purchase any of the unsuccessful designs at one guinea each. Drawings are to reach the London office of THE STUDIO by June 1. A XLVII. DESIGN FOR THE FRONT COVER OF "SHORT STORIES." The size of this magazine is 9 inches by $ \frac{6}{8} $ inches, and drawings submitted must be in proportion. The cover is to be designed for printing in two colours, preferably red and black, on a white or tinted ground. Especial prominence must be given to the title, for displaying which approximately one-third of the space must be devoted. Space must be left for insertion of Vol., No., date (month and year), price (15 cents), and name and address of publishers, viz.: The Short Stories Company, Ltd., 55 Liberty Street, New York. Space may also be left for insertion of special items in the contents or other matter. FIRST PRIZE: Three Guineas; SECOND PRIZE: Two Guineas. Prize designs to become the absolute property of the above-named publishers, who are to be at liberty to purchase other designs submitted at the price of one guinea each. Drawings, packed flat, to reach the London Office of THE STUDIO by July 1. AD. II A XLVIII. DESIGN FOR A SIMPLE COTTAGE PORCH. When this subject was set some time ago many of the designs submitted were much too elaborate, and their execution would have involved a large outlay. The design now asked for must be such as can be carried out economically and by a local joiner. Drawings are to be in pen-and-ink and not more than 12 inches by 9 inches in size.
