--- The Man Hans Richter (1) was born in Berlin in 1888, and from his childhood onward, he displays talents for music and drawing as well as talent for portraiture which has never been contested. His training as an architect at the “Arts and Crafts” school in Berlin and Weimar, and his own aspirations, bring him close to the art of the present moment. In parallel, the revelation of cubism and futurism, his relations with “Der sturm” and “Der blaue Reiter,” his participation in the magazine, “Die Aktion” explain the global nature of his engagement. But the war of 1914—that heartbreak of hope for cosmopolitanism by a generation of artist—came as an interruption. Excused from military service in 1916, Richter went to Switzerland, to Zurich, a little island of peace amid the war. No doubt seeking for a soulmate, at once joints the Dada movement which was then getting underway. At the (famous) “Voltaire cabaret,” he collaborates in the creation of the decoration, and the writing of manifestoes, and the games of his friends and partners: Ball, Arp, Tzara, Janco, Huelsenbeck... From a primary global and confused perception, it is out of their paradoxical situation that there progressively emerges the direction of their attitude, and they clarify distinctly the object of their art. Richter’s meeting in 1918 with Eggeling marks for him the beginning of great creations. They form the bases of the painting-dynamics upon rollers, and those of an autonomous art of cinema, with Richter creating abstract cinema. After the breaking up of the group in the postwar years, from 1919 to 1924, Richter teaches at the Bauhaus, takes part in Constructivism, creates the “Art Magazine G” in the orbit of “De Stijl” with Van Doesburg. Like a true “Dada,” Richter worked in various directions... painting, cinema, literature... according to his definition : > “Culture is the problem of existence.” But the Nazis came! Toward 1939-1940, Richter had to become an expatriate. His peregrinations came to an end in the United States where he was first a teacher then director at the “Film Institute” in New York City College. He has since acquired American citizenship. And, since the end of the war, he has divided his life between America and Europe, often stopping in Paris. Thus I had the occasion to meet Hans Richter (2) and interview him (3), at the time of a retrospective of his cinematographic work. Beneath his refined surface, he concealed the trigger of a truth to be revealed under certain conditions. His conditions... A mystery which his interview allows us to understand. Questioned concerning the single-voicedness of the a contrario aspect of the negation-creation work, which cannot be dissociated from the Dada sphere, this is what his words reveal in an abrupt and percussive language.
