th. Bitran’s “doubles” constitute, for about the past three years, a major stage in the seekings of this painter who is simultaneously enthusiastic and dissatisfied, constantly anxious about the direction he is taking. They express his pictorial as well as his mental concerns: the picture is not only an image to look at, it is an operative field to be penetrated, structured, illuminated, the putting into painting of a sum of acts going from the cerebral to the visual, from the subject to the object and from the exterior to the interior of the canvas, that rectangle in which seeing meets knowing. Double n° 14, 1973, 114 × 146 cm. Et déjà le It is easy to speak of a stage in his work. Bitran has given himself entirely to his “doubles,” and his conception of painting, just as his passionate experimenter’s comportment, have been changed because of it. It was, for him, the reexamination of the picture, but also an old score to settle with the image, the image, the place where the painter coexists with this projection of the visible through which the others receive something like the duplicate of their own
