The following group of four Competitions is set for the purpose of encouraging and improving art in advertising. The competitions are restricted to advertisements for the press as distinguished from poster advertising, and the drawings must therefore be made suitable for reproduction in black-and-white. Designs may be pictorial, or decorative, or allegorical, or they may consist of fancy or peculiar lettering. The lettering should be very clear and readable. The designs must be made suitable for reduction to any of three sizes—namely, 14 ins. by 10 ins., or 7 ins. by 10 ins., or 5 ins. by 7 ins. respectively—that is to say, a full-page, half-page, or quarter-page advertisement in the “Graphic.” SECTION 1.—Drawings suitable for advertising articles of general consumption, such as Cocoa, Tea, Coffee, Bread, Cakes, Jams, Biscuits, Oats, Meat Extracts, etc. Prize for the best Full-page Design (14 × 10), Twenty Guineas.
