THE STUDIO INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS. Preliminary Announcement. In order to make the Studio competitions still more useful and practical, the Editor has decided to introduce a New Series, which it is hoped will not only be of great advantage to competitors, but will also help to encourage the production of articles to which the appellation of "artistic" may be applied with all justice. This New Series has for its main object the encouragement of the designer who is also the craftsman. The highest artistic decorative work can only be produced when the designer and worker are one and the same person, and it is desirable that the fullest encouragement shall be given to those who combine in themselves the necessary qualifications. In pursuance of this idea, first, second and third prize medals will be awarded by the Editor of THE STUDIO in each of the following classes of design and workmanship:— 1. Gold and Silver Jewellery, with or without precious stones or enamel. 2. Silver Plate. 3. Brass and Copper Repoussé and Chased Work. 4. Wrought Iron Work. 5. Furniture, plain, or decorated by inlay, carving or other methods. 6. Carved Wood Panelling. 7. Stained Glass. 8. Gesso Work. 9. Woven Fabrics. 10. Embroidered and Worked Fabrics. 11. Stencilled Work. 12. Mosaic. 13. Bookbinding. 14. Enamelling. 15. Pottery Painting. 16. Illumination. 17. Wood Engraving. 18. Medallions. 19. Statuettes in clay, ivory, marble or bronze, not over 18 inches high. 20. Door-knockers and other fittings in cast-bronze. In all cases more than one object may be submitted by each exhibitor. The objects intended for competition in all these various sections must be delivered in London in the spring of 1901 (date and other particulars will be announced in a later number of THE STUDIO). The articles for which medals are awarded, and a selection of other objects submitted, will be exhibited at one of the London Galleries (date and particulars to be specified later), to which the public and the Press will be invited. THE FOLLOWING ARE THE ORDINARY MONTHLY COMPETITIONS AND ARE IN NO WAY CONNECTED WITH THOSE REFERRED TO IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT ABOVE. NEW SERIES OF ORDINARY MONTHLY COMPETITIONS CLASS A. DECORATIVE ART. A. v. DESIGN FOR AN EMBROIDERED PANEL OF A FIRE SCREEN. (Particulars appeared in the February Number.) A. VI. DESIGN FOR A MAGAZINE COVER. The Proprietors of the LADY'S MAGAZINE, PEARSON'S MAGAZINE, and the ROYAL MAGAZINE offer two cash prizes, the first £3, the second £2, for the most original cover designs suitable for a monthly magazine of a popular nature. The design should be drawn with a view to printing in one, two, or three colours—two for preference, and should be made in the proportion 12 ins. deep by 8 ins. wide. The two points specially to be borne in mind by competitors are: (1) originality in treatment; (2) bold striking effects. The Proprietors of PEARSON'S, the LADY'S, and the ROYAL reserve the right to purchase any of the unsuccessful designs at the price of one guinea each. All designs must be securely packed flat; must be addressed to the Editor of THE STUDIO, with the distinguishing mark "Pearson's" on the left-hand top corner of the parcel, and must reach 5 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London, by May 1st. No designs will be returned unless accompanied by stamps for that purpose. A. VII. DESIGN FOR A PEWTER HOT-WATER JUG. Drawings, which must be full size, may be made in pen and ink or in monochrome wash. The decoration should be restrained, and should not cover the entire surface of the jug.
