THE STUDIO COMPETITIONS. NEW SERIES OF ORDINARY MONTHLY COMPETITIONS CLASS A. DECORATIVE ART. A XI. SCHEME FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF ART IN ADVERTISING. The following group of four Competitions is set for the purpose of encouraging and improving art in advertising. The competitions are restricted to advertisements for the press as distinguished from poster advertising, and the drawings must therefore be made suitable for reproduction in black-and-white. Designs may be pictorial, or decorative, or allegorical, or they may consist of fancy or peculiar lettering. The lettering should be very clear and readable. It is not absolutely essential to add the name of the advertiser to the designs submitted, but if, by reason of peculiar lettering, or otherwise, a drawing would suffer by the omission, the name of any large advertiser whose advertisements appear regularly in the English illustrated papers may be incorporated in the design. The designs must be made suitable for reduction to any of three sizes—namely, 14 ins. by 10 ins., or 7 ins. by 10 ins., or 5 ins. by 7 ins. respectively—that is to say, a full-page, half-page, or quarter-page advertisement in the “Graphic.” SECTION 1.—Drawings suitable for advertising articles of general consumption, such as Cocoa, Tea, Coffee, Bread, Cakes, Jams, Biscuits, Oats, Meat Extracts, etc. Prize for the best Full-page Design ( $14 \times 10$ ), Twenty Guineas. SECTION 4.—Drawings suitable for advertising Tobaccos, Cigars, Cigarettes, Pipes, Matches, etc. Prize for the best Full-page Design ( $14 \times 10$ ), Twenty Guineas. Prize for the best Half-page Design ( $7 \times 10$ ), Ten Guineas. Prize for the best Quarter-page Design ( $5 \times 7$ ), Five Guineas. N.B.—Drawings need not be made exactly $14 \times 10$ , $7 \times 10$ , and $5 \times 7$ , but they must be capable of being reduced to these dimensions. Each competitor may send in drawings for any or all the different sections, and for any or all the different sizes, provided that a separate design is submitted in each case. One Studio Coupon will suffice for all the drawings sent in for the various sections of Comp. A XI. The competitor’s pseudonym, and the section and size for which the design is intended, should be distinctly written upon the back of each drawing sent in; for instance, “Comp. A x’, Section 2, Full-page”; or “Comp. A xi, Section 4, Quarter-page.” The designs to which prizes are awarded will become the property of the donors of the prizes, for whom the Editor reserves the right of purchasing any of the unsuccessful designs at a price to be arranged hereafter. Drawings, packed flat, and with the number and section or sections of the competition distinctly written outside the parcel, to be received at the London office of THE STUDIO by October 1st. A XIII. It having been decided to erect a Memorial in Sheffield to Her late Majesty Queen Victoria on the site now occupied by the "Monolith" in Fargate, such Memorial to include a Statue of Her late Majesty, the Executive Committee invite DESIGNS for such Memorial and Statue. The design of the Memorial, and material proposed to be used, must be suited to the site and climatic conditions of the city. The Memorial must not occupy more space than is comprised within a circle of twenty feet diameter without any projections. Competitors must be prepared to carry out the erection of the Memorial, including the execution of the Statue, at a total cost of not exceeding £3,000. Prizes of £100, £50, and £25 respectively will be awarded to the three best of the unsuccessful competitors, to be selected by the Executive Committee, who will, if they think desirable, call in the advice of an expert. The Committee do not bind themselves to accept any design submitted, but in such event the prizes will be awarded in order of merit as the Committee may determine. Drawings to be sent in anonymously, but accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the Author's name and address. When each case is unpacked its contents will be marked by the Corporation Authorities for identification, but no distinguishing mark, motto, or device is to be put on the drawings, description, statement, envelope, or case by the Competitors or their Agents.
