There seems little doubt that we are tending to this, under the conditions of modern life, and the results of this trend are significantly expressed in the STOCKHOLM EXHIBITION, treated from an interesting standpoint by the Editor as a result of a special visit. That GRACE and MODERNITY are not incompatible is admirably shown by M. ANDRÉ SALMON, the famous French critic, in a spirited essay on the charming yet vigorous work of SAVELY SORINE, the Russian painter of international reputation. CUBISM, that “howling desert” to the uninitiated, is here very ably analysed by George Saiko, who finds its roots in Dürer and, in its modern manifestations, the true, though as yet scarce seen, feelers towards a new naturalism, adapted to the dawning age. In addition there is an article upon a BERLIN PLANNING PROBLEM, by one of the arbiters of The New Berlin, in which three great German architects propound interestingly various solutions; another upon the stimulating output of the HALLE WORKSHOPS; a short appreciation of Mr. BERNARD MENINSKY’s recent work, and Mr. Salaman’s survey of CURRENT PRINTS of merit, besides an enlarged section of Book Reviews. --- INFORMATION Valuable originals are usually insured while in custody of The Studio, but it must be understood that all material is sent, and received, at owner’s risk. Wilenski. The New Spain, by W. Gaunt, is an important appreciation of the trend of the rising tide of Spanish vigour. FEBRUARY.—Italian Portraiture of the Renaissance. A lucid introduction, by T. W. Earp, is accompanied by 8 striking plates in photogravure, of selected, brilliant examples from these superb masters of the psychological portrait. MARCH.—Modern British Wood-Engraving stands out as pre-eminently successful in the international output in this medium. The March Number devotes 16 pages and two Special Supplements to its most recent development. The New Art of Light provides practical instances of the almost magical success of the light-factor in handling diversely difficult problems of interior planning, and contains ideas that are equally applicable to rooms large or small, old or new. APRIL.—John Maynard Keynes, one of the most internationally notable figures in the field of Economics to-day, demonstrates the practical success, after 4 years’ trial, of a scheme which guarantees a living minimum income to the members of a group of artists by co-operative marketing of their output. The widely applicable principles he reveals are of great potential significance in the artistic life of modern nations. MAY.—The Conversation Piece — those masterpieces of Hogarth, Zoffany and many others—represent a peculiarly British, and in many respects, unique contribution to the development of Art. The subject is illustrated by some of the finest examples of the British School, in photogravure, colour and half-tone, and are accompanied by a lucid article, tracing the development in England from the subject picture to modern art.
