'THE STUDIO' INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. REVISED RULES. (1) All purchasers of THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs and Compositions must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings, &c., submitted for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only, and must be accompanied by the Coupon given on page xx, duly filled in and signed. Such coupon must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. This envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes if the rules of the Competition have not been complied with, or if in the opinion of the judges the drawings, &c., are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO, or any Extra Number of it, any of the drawings, designs, photographs and other works submitted. Subject to this, the copyright in such drawings, &c., belongs (unless otherwise stated or implied in the announcement) to the competitors sending them, and they are free to dispose of them as they like. (5) All Drawings, &c., including those to which prizes have been awarded (unless otherwise stated), will be returned to Competitors at their own risk as soon as possible after publication of the awards, provided sufficient stamps are sent to cover postage or carriage and packing. For this purpose a minimum of sixpence has been fixed, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. Colonial and foreign stamps will be accepted. (6) All drawings, prints, &c., must be claimed within one month after the publication of the awards (except those sent from remote countries, for which a period of four months will be allowed), failing which they may be disposed of as the Proprietor of THE STUDIO thinks fit. (7) All drawings, &c., must be sent in packed flat, except where otherwise expressly stated. (8) All designs, drawings, prints, &c., and correspondence thereon to be addressed THE STUDIO, 44 Leicester Square, London, W.C., and marked "Prize Competitions," with the number of the Competition, "A XXVI," "B XIX," "C XIX," &c., on the outside of the package or letter referring to it. It is not absolutely necessary that any lettering should be embodied in the design. Drawings are to be in black-and-white, and not to exceed 8 inches by 6 inches in size. FIRST PRIZE: Two Guineas; SECOND PRIZE, One Guinea. Drawings to be received at the London office of THE STUDIO by April 1. B XIX. COMPETITION FOR TWO SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE BUSHEY SCHOOL OF PAINTING. The Scholarships will take the shape of free tuition at the school during three consecutive terms, subject to the existing regulations of the school. The Competition is open to all art students of either sex between the ages of seventeen and twenty-eight, but past and present students of the school are ineligible. One Scholarship will be awarded to a male student, the other to a female student. Each competitor is required to submit a study, either in black-and-white or in oil colours, from a living model, and also a composition study. The drawings may be from either figure or animal models, and should be of a convenient size. The awards will be made by the Editor of THE STUDIO and such co-adjuditor as he may appoint, and no award will be made if, in the judgment of the Editor, the drawings do not reach a sufficiently high standard. Prize drawings to become the property of Miss Lucy Kemp-Welch, the Principal of the School, who will hold herself responsible for carrying out the awards. THE . . . PIANOLA PIANO A New Invention. IT is now some six years since the Pianola was placed before the public, but its history goes back for more than eight years previously, during which time it was subjected to constant experimenting; and from the idea of a purely mechanical device for striking the keys of a piano there was gradually evolved the artistic musical instrument now known to everyone. The development of the Pianola idea suggests, as a logical sequence, the invention of a piano and piano-player combined, but the obstacles in the way of a successful combination of the two instruments were of such a difficult nature, and required so much delicate and careful experimenting, that we are only now able to announce the successful evolution of the Pianola Piano, and in so doing we are free to state that the combined instrument is as artistic, interesting and musical as the Piano and Pianola in their separate forms; while, embodying, as it does, a piano of the finest grade with the best artistic means whereby anyone can play it, the Pianola Piano is therefore the first piano in its complete form. It can be played by hand or by means of the music-roll at will, and is instantly and always available to either the musician or the novice. The Pianola action placed within the case of the piano is of the very latest type, known as the Metrostyle Pianola, the only piano-player which, in addition to providing perfection in technique, indicates the interpretation of a composition and enables anyone to render it with all the tempo variations and expression effects of some well-known artiste.
