'THE STUDIO' INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. REVISED RULES. (1) All subscribers to THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only. The Coupon given on p. xxv, with details fully filled in, must accompany each drawing or set of drawings, and must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. As this envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made, any inquiry should be forwarded in a separate letter. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes, provided that, in the unanimous opinion of the judges, the drawings do not fulfil the rules of the Competition, or otherwise are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO any of the drawings, designs and photographs submitted. All prize drawings, designs and photographic prints become the property of the proprietor of THE STUDIO, unless otherwise specified. (5) No design, drawing or photographic print will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. The term “sufficient postage” has been fixed at a minimum of sixpence, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. (6) All designs must be sent in packed flat, unless specially excepted in certain competitions. The London Exhibitions, Ltd., offer three prizes—seven guineas, three guineas, and one guinea respectively—for designs of posters suitable for advertising the “Imperial Royal Austrian Exhibition, Earl’s Court, 1906, May to October,” these words being incorporated in the design; or, as an alternative, posters suitable for the Tyrol Village, which will be a special feature of the Exhibition, with the words, “Imperial Royal Austrian Exhibition, Earl’s Court, Tyrol Village, Empress Hall.” The designs must be suitable for lithographic reproduction in not more than five printings, the number of printings necessary for each design to be stated thereon. All designs submitted are to be of the following dimensions:— (1.) 15 inches high by 20 inches wide (for reproduction 120 inches by 160 inches); or— (2.) 15 inches high by 10 inches wide (for reproduction 120 inches by 80 inches). In the case of the Exhibition Bills preference will be given to a design with one emblematic figure and prominent lettering. In previous years many designs containing the finest work were rendered unsuitable through including too much detail. Competitors should bear in mind that simple, broad effects are essential for effective large posters.
