'THE STUDIO' INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. REVISED RULES. (1) All subscribers to THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only. The Coupon given on p. xxii, with details fully filled in, must accompany each drawing or set of drawings, and must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. As this envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made, any inquiry should be forwarded in a separate letter. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes, provided that, in the unanimous opinion of the judges, the drawings do not fulfil the rules of the Competition, or otherwise are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO any of the designs submitted. All prize designs become the property of the Proprietor of THE STUDIO, unless otherwise specified. (5) No design will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. The term "sufficient postage" has been fixed at a minimum of sixpence, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. (6) All designs must be sent in packed flat, unless specially excepted in certain competitions. MOZART'S THREE ESSENTIALS. MOZART has said that there are three essentials to artistic pianoforte playing, namely, technical skill, sympathy, and understanding. The Metrostyle Pianola provides all three—the nimble fingerwork to play any composition correctly, and the sympathy and understanding of great musicians as embodied in the interpretations which they have provided for the Pianola. The actual achievement of the Metrostyle Pianola is so different and so startling in its departure from anything hitherto thought possible in music, that some explanation is necessary. When Paderewski, or Moskowski, or any other musical authority, plays a composition on the piano, the result is instinct with the artist's musical individuality and sympathetic understanding. But until the Metrostyle Pianola came it was not possible to record the interpretations of the virtuosi so that their playing might be reproduced by anyone. Thanks to this new instrument, however, the most famous pianists and composers have now marked music rolls, showing how they play them, with all the dynamic effects, the changes of tempo, and the subtle nuances: that go to make up a great performance. By following such markings with one of the expression devices of the Metrostyle Pianola (a thing anyone can do) the virtuoso's rendition is reproduced exactly. This is by no means all the Metrostyle Pianola achieves; its possibilities in the direction of independent expression control are unlimited; but the very fact that you can have Paderewski, or Grieg, or Chaminade recitals in your own home is of itself adequate reason for the investigation of the Metrostyle Pianola. THE GIBSON CALENDAR 1905 The Gibson Calendar for 1905 maintains the high standard of excellence which it has set in former years. The new issue is a superlatively charming production, sumptuous in its “get-up,” and unique in the cleverness of its contents.
