THE STUDIO COMPETITIONS. NEW SERIES OF ORDINARY MONTHLY COMPETITIONS CLASS A. DECORATIVE ART. Closes Oct. 1 A XI. SCHEME FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF ART IN ADVERTISING. The following group of four Competitions is set for the purpose of encouraging and improving art in advertising. The competitions are restricted to advertisements for the press as distinguished from poster advertising, and the drawings must therefore be made suitable for reproduction in black-and-white. Designs may be pictorial, or decorative, or allegorical, or they may consist of fancy or peculiar lettering. The lettering should be very clear and readable. It is not absolutely essential to add the name of the advertiser to the designs submitted, but if, by reason of peculiar lettering, or otherwise, a drawing would suffer by the omission, the name of any large advertiser whose advertisements appear regularly in the English illustrated papers may be incorporated in the design. The designs must be made suitable for reduction to any of three sizes—namely, 14 ins. by 10 ins., or 7 ins. by 10 ins., or 5 ins. by 7 ins. respectively—that is to say, a full-page, half-page, or quarter-page advertisement in the “Graphic.” SECTION 1.—Drawings suitable for advertising articles of general consumption, such as Cocoa, Tea, Coffee, Bread, Cakes, Jams, Biscuits, Oats, Meat Extracts, etc. - Prize for the best Full-page Design (14 × 10), Twenty Guineas. - Prize for the best Half-page Design (7 × 10), Ten Guineas. - Prize for the best Quarter-page Design (5 × 7), Five Guineas. Each competitor may send in drawings for any or all the different sections, and for any or all the different sizes, provided that a separate design is submitted in each case. One Studio Coupon will suffice for all the drawings sent in for the various sections of Comp. A XI. The competitor’s pseudonym, and the section and size for which the design is intended, should be distinctly written upon the back of each drawing sent in; for instance, “Comp. A XI, Section 2, Full-page”; or “Comp. A XI, Section 4, Quarter-page.” The designs to which prizes are awarded will become the property of the donors of the prizes, for whom the Editor reserves the right of purchasing any of the unsuccessful designs at a price to be arranged hereafter. Exhibition of the “Kuenstler Kolonie” at Darmstadt, 1901. In response to many requests we have the honour to announce that the above Exhibition will be specially treated in a Series of 6 to 8 Special Numbers of “Deutschen Kunst und Dekoration.” The First Part will commence with August, and each Part will deal with a separate Artist. The Illustrations and Letterpress will be of the usual high standard. The Publications will give a general view, not only of the Outside Architecture and the Gardens, but also the whole of the Internal Arrangements, the Furniture, the Painting, Textile Products, Keramic Work, Plastic Work, &c., &c., from Photographs. There will also be a critical article on the whole Exhibition. The sole right of reproduction of many of the Works has been obtained. The First Special Number will be devoted to the work of Paul Buerck, the youngest member of the Colony; and in succeeding numbers examples of the work of Patriz Huber, Ludwig Habisch, Rudolf Bosselt, Professor Hans Christiansen, Professor P. Behrens will be given, as well as the Kuenstlerhaus, the Garden Architecture, including the peculiar Country Residence of Professor Olbrich. The Subscription ($^{12}$ Copies per annum) is 20 Marks; Abroad 22 Marks. The subscription commences with October 1st. The two previous copies of the “Kuenstler-Kolonie” can be supplied at 2.60 Marks per part.
