(Particulars appeared in the December Number.) A. xxxi. DESIGN FOR AN ALPHABET. The designs are to include an alphabet (capitals and small letters) intended for use in official railway station inscriptions—i.e., names of stations, notices, warnings (against crossing the line), etc. The chief purpose to which the letters are to be applied is in connection with the names of the stations (to be boldly displayed) outside the buildings. The characters should therefore be very clear and legible at a considerable distance. In addition to the alphabets the designs are to include the two following inscriptions: (1) St. Maixent, and (2) SALLE D’ATTENTE DE Iere CLASSE. These words are to appear: (1) on a sheet 60 centimetres (2 feet) high by 2 metres (6 feet 6 inches) wide; and (2) on a sheet 30 centimetres (1 foot) high by 2 metres (6 feet 6 inches) in width. The size of the letters in the complete alphabets must be not less than 10 centimetres (4 inches) in height. Complete discretion is left to competitors as to the decorative arrangement of their inscriptions. FIRST PRIZE: 200 Francs (£8); SECOND PRIZE: 100 Francs (£4). TWO ADDITIONAL PRIZES OF 50 Francs (£2) each. The winning designs will be the property of the donors of the prizes, who, moreover, reserve the right to acquire possession of any other design by arrangement as to terms. Designs, rolled in cylinders, must reach the London Office of THE STUDIO by the 1st of March, or the Paris Office by the 27th of February. CLASS B. DRAWINGS FOR BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS, ETC. A daintily coloured figure design is required, the subject taking the form of a pastoral or of Louis XIV. genre, and suggesting either Music, Love or Art. The drawings, which must not exceed in size 8 inches by 6 inches (upright or oblong), may be executed in pastel or in water-colour. FIRST PRIZE: Three Guineas; SECOND PRIZE: Two Guineas; THIRD PRIZE: One Guinea. The winning designs to become the property of the firm giving the prizes, for whom the Editor reserves the right of purchasing any of the unsuccessful designs at One Guinea each. This Special Competition is set with a view to affording Colonial Artists an opportunity of introducing their work to the notice of the Mother Country. Subject: a Landscape, to be executed in black ink on white cardboard or in monochrome wash on drawing paper. Drawings must not exceed in size a page of THE STUDIO. FIRST PRIZE: Three Guineas; SECOND PRIZE: Two Guineas; THIRD PRIZE: One Guinea. The rules governing the ordinary competitions are applicable to this one, except Nos. 1 and 5.
