THE STUDIO INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS FOR RULES, SEE PREVIOUS NUMBER. CLASS A. INDUSTRIAL DESIGNS. A. xxvii. Two Designs for Posters. (Particulars appeared in the November Number.) A. xxviii. Designs for Wall-paper or Frieze. A prize of £20 is offered for the best design for a wall-paper or frieze. The design may consist of a wall-paper or frieze, or a wall-paper and frieze together. If a frieze is shown with the wall-paper, and approved by the judges, a further sum of £6 will be given. Competitors are allowed a free hand with regard to the treatment of the subject; but for the uninitiated the following practical suggestions are offered. Any number of colours, from 1 to 16, may be used, but a single-colour design will receive the same consideration as one in a larger number of colours. The "half-drop" on which most papers are designed may be briefly described as follows (but designs may, with every prospect of success, be also made to match): If a tracing of the design is taken and cut into four quarters, as shown by the dotted lines, the top quarter AB, instead of matching across at CD, should drop half and be found to match exactly at DE, i.e., x should come to xx and o to oo. To make our meaning still more clear, imagine a design composed of one line and a flower, the latter falling on the side joining. When dropped half it would appear as here: Practically any sized design can be produced by the hand or machine process in paper staining, but any one beginning to design for wall-papers must fix 21 inches as the width, but the height should be $10\frac{1}{2}$ , 12, $13\frac{1}{2}$ , 14, 15, 16 $\frac{1}{2}$ , 18, 21, 24, 27, or 30 inches. On the same plan as before stated, a design can of course be made to drop half, no matter what the height. Also it must be remembered it may drop in any denomination of its width, say 7 or $10\frac{1}{2}$ inches; it only means cutting a design 7 or $10\frac{1}{2}$ inches in width in four quarters, and seeing that it matches when dropped. The prize designs will become the property of the donors of the prizes, who reserve the right to purchase any of the unsuccessful designs at a price to be agreed upon hereafter. This Special Competition is set with a view to affording Colonial artists an opportunity of introducing their work to the notice of the Mother Country. Subject: a Landscape, to be executed in black ink on white cardboard or in monochrome wash on drawing paper. Drawings must not exceed in size a page of THE STUDIO. FIRST PRIZE: Three Guineas; SECOND PRIZE: Two Guineas; THIRD PRIZE: One Guinea. The rules governing the ordinary competitions are applicable to this one, except Nos. 1 and 5. Only Subscribers resident in a British Colony or Dependency are qualified to compete. Competitors wishing to have their Drawings returned must enclose a sum sufficient to cover the cost of postage. Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. THE HOLY GOSPELS. WITH ILLUSTRATIONS FROM THE OLD MASTERS OF THE XIVth, XVth, and XVIth CENTURIES. The Society will begin to publish on January 2, 1899, an edition of the Holy Gospels, fully illustrated with world-renowned pictures. More than three hundred works dealing exclusively with the events of our Lord's life have been chosen from among the greatest examples of the Italian, German, Flemish, and French Schools for the subject of these Illustrations. These pictures, distributed as they are amongst the Churches and Galleries of the civilised world, are here, for the first time, collected together and presented in proximity to the sacred narrative which they were intended to illustrate. The eminent firm of Messrs. Goupil & Co. (Jean, Boussod, Manzi, Joyant & Co.) are responsible for the execution of the work, and it is, therefore, needless to say that every care will be taken in its production. The work will be issued in twenty-four parts. The parts will appear at intervals of a fortnight, each of them consisting of sixteen pages, with at least ten illustrations in the text and two separate plates printed in two tints. The price will be 1s. 8d. per part. Part I. will appear on January 2, 1899, and the whole issue of the twenty-four parts will be completed in December 1899.
