THE STUDIO INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS REVISED RULES (1) All subscribers to THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only. The Coupon, page AD. VIII. with details fully filled in, must accompany each drawing or set of drawings, and must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. As this envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made, any inquiry should be forwarded in a separate letter. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes, provided that, in the unanimous opinion of the judges, the drawings do not fulfil the rules of the Competition or otherwise are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO any of the designs submitted. (5) No design will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. The term "sufficient postage" has been fixed at a minimum of sixpence, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. (6) All designs must be sent in packed flat, unless specially excepted in certain competitions. (7) All designs and correspondence thereon to be addressed THE STUDIO, 5 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London, W.C., and marked "Prize Competitions," with the number of the Competition, "A xix," "B xii," "C xi," &c., on the outside of the package, or letter referring to it. (8) An infringement of any of the above Rules will disqualify a Competitor. CLASS A.—INDUSTRIAL DESIGNS. A. xiii. DESIGN FOR A PORTIÈRE. (Particulars appeared in the January Number.) A. xiv. DESIGN FOR A POSTER. (Particulars appeared in the February Number.) A. xv. DESIGN FOR A MOSAIC FRIEZE. The design is for a mosaic which is intended to form a frieze on the principal front of the Horniman Free Museum, Forest Hill. The sections of the Museum comprise amongst others the following special Courts: Prehistoric, Egyptian, Indian, Japanese, Colonial, Natural History, Keramics, Old English Furniture, and Tapestries. It may be well to state that the building is to be executed in Doulting stone, which is of a light cream tint, and that its design does not bind the competitor to assimilate his work to any of the recognised styles of architecture. The space to be covered is 33 feet by 10 feet, and the work will be at a height of 16 feet from the ground. A figure-subject is suggested, but this treatment is not obligatory. Gold should be sparingly if at all used, as experience shows its inability to resist the English climate. The designs should be drawn to the scale of 1 in. to the foot, that is to say 33 inches by 10 inches. PRIZE: Twenty-five Guineas. It is intended, should it be found possible, to entrust the preparation of the full size cartoons to the successful competitor, in which case a special arrangement would be made with him, apart from the prize now offered. The judges will be Mr. C. Harrison Townsend and the Editor of THE STUDIO. Designs, packed flat, to be received at the London office of THE STUDIO by June 1, 1898.
