THE STUDIO INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. REVISED RULES. (1) All subscribers to THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only. The Coupon, given on p. xii. with details fully filled in, must accompany each drawing or set of drawings, and must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. As this envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made, any inquiry should be forwarded in a separate letter. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes, provided that, in the unanimous opinion of the judges, the drawings do not fulfil the rules of the Competition, or otherwise are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO any of the designs submitted. All prize designs become the property of the Proprietor of THE STUDIO, unless otherwise specified. (5) No design will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. The term “sufficient postage” has been fixed at a minimum of sixpence, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. (6) All designs must be sent in packed flat, unless specially excepted in certain competitions. (7) All designs and correspondence thereon to be addressed THE STUDIO, 5 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London, W.C., and marked “Prize Competitions,” with the number of the Competition, “A XIX,” “B XII,” “C XI,” &c., on the outside of the package or letter referring to it. IT does not need the experience of the business man whose abilities are concentrated on the development of vast undertakings to enable one to realise that there are two methods of conducting and of guiding the destinies of a Great Retail Trading Concern. In Furnishing particularly, where artistic development advances year by year with such wondrous strides, it is easy to see that the old-fashioned House which goes on from year to year pretty much as it always has done, collecting, in spite of itself, an accumulation of articles which become less saleable the longer they are kept, is being easily out-distanced by the up-to-date progressive establishment which at any sacrifice disposes of the remains of its season’s stock at the close of every twelvemonth. Messrs. Hampton & Sons, of Pall Mall East, are now following this, their annual, custom, and in order to stock all departments in the forthcoming Spring Season of 1932 with only the very latest productions, they are at very great sacrifice, offering their high-class furnishing effects to all whose discernment decides them to visit the showrooms in Pall Mall during the first three weeks of January. Owing to a great collapse in the carpet trade on the Continent, Messrs. Hampton are also able to give the advantage of $3\frac{1}{4}$ per cent. below usual prices to those whose requirements may be in the direction of fine floor coverings. Splendid Turkey carpets, of fine soft texture and wonderful wear, now being cleared at prices which are actually less than the current wholesale rates for the same goods. That the public can buy these carpets at the prices quoted in Hampton’s Clearance Catalogue would be incredible but for the explanation that the recurring “slumps” in the wholesale markets, due to over-production and other causes, must of necessity occasionally afford opportunities to secure large consignments at heavy reductions. By purchasing entire shipments Hampton & Sons secure such carpets at lower prices than would be possible to concerns whose business was of a less extensive character. Thus by their enterprising and up-to-date methods of trading Hamptons secure the finest carpets and other House Furnishing produce. Indian, Chlidema, Wilton, Axminster, and Brussels all have been reduced so much that a rush for their possession will be certain. In conclusion, it should not be forgotten by those who are smartening up their houses in expectation of either letting or occupying them themselves during the coming Coronation season, that now is their time and here their opportunity to do this at so great a saving that, as the contents of the Catalogue will convince them, they cannot afford to neglect it.—GENTLEWOMAN, Dec. 28, 1901.
