THE STUDIO COMPETITIONS. CLASS A. DECORATIVE ART. A XI. SCHEME FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF ART IN ADVERTISING. SECTION 3.—Drawings suitable for Advertising. Beverages of all kinds, such as Spirits, Wines, Beers, Lime Juice, Temperance Drinks, Mineral Waters, etc. The designs submitted for this section were not considered by the judges to be of sufficient merit to warrant an award and the Editor has therefore decided to hold over the prizes for the time being and reopen the competition on slightly different lines. Three prizes will be offered of Twenty Guineas, Ten Guineas and Five Guineas respectively, for the best designs sent in by January 1st, 1902, irrespective of sizes (no drawing to be smaller than 7 ins. by 5). The designs already submitted will be kept over and again included, but will be immediately returned to the competitors for alteration and improvement if required. Should the winning designs not be considered of sufficient merit the Editor reserves the right of dividing any or all of the prizes. Designs may be pictorial, or decorative, or allegorical, or they may consist of fancy or peculiar lettering. Competitors are advised that too much decoration should be avoided, one of the most important points being clearness and legibility. Drawings, packed flat, and marked on the outside Comp. DESIGN FOR A PADDOCK FENCE AND GATE. (Particulars appeared in the October Number.) A XVII. DESIGN FOR A POSTER. Designs to be suitable for reproduction by lithography in not more than five printings. The number of printings necessary for its reproduction must be stated upon each design submitted. Drawings may be made either (1) 15 inches high by 20 inches wide (for reproduction, 120 inches high by 160 inches wide), or (2) 15 inches high by 10 inches wide (for reproduction, 120 inches high by 80 inches wide). (1) All subscribers to THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only. The Coupon, given on p. xii. with details fully filled in, must accompany each drawing or set of drawings, and must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. As this envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made, any inquiry should be forwarded in a separate letter. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes, provided that, in the unanimous opinion of the judges, the drawings do not fulfil the rules of the Competition, or otherwise are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO any of the designs submitted. All prize designs become the property of the Proprietor of THE STUDIO, unless otherwise specified. (5) No design will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. The term "sufficient postage" has been fixed at a minimum of sixpence, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. (6) All designs must be sent in packed flat, unless specially excepted in certain competitions.
