Mr. Martin Hardie of the Victoria and Albert Museum, himself an experienced practitioner in this medium, deals with the revival of water-colour painting at the present day. The question is treated chiefly from the side of methods and materials, for which purpose Mr. Hardie has invited the replies of a number of eminent water-colourists in a questionnaire upon the colours constituting their palettes, the papers employed, their methods of working, etc. The article thus contains many illuminating facts upon the use of the medium, and is illustrated by upwards of twenty reproductions, two being in colour, representative of the various styles employed. Dr. Tancred Borenius contributes a second article upon the KALEIDOSCOPE OF TASTE IN PRINTING, in which he examines a number of the lesser known Italian painters of the 16th-17th centuries and reveals a field in which it is still possible to acquire “Old-Master” pictures of fine quality at moderate cost. Mr. SYDNEY LEE, R.A., speaking from a long and fruitful experience of Roman conditions, gives his impressions of Rome as an Artist’s Working Ground, which he considers to be admirable for ten months out of the twelve. In THE SKYScraper CURTAIN, the American architect, DOUGLAS HASKELL, examines the development of the multi-storied building, and Mrs. KATHARINE KERSHAW that of the ART OF THE TABLE in the modern home.
