THE STUDIO --- By WALTER BAYES, R.W.S. THE ART OF DECORATIVE PAINTING With over 100 illustrations. Just published. Medium 8vo., 21s. net. Mr. Bayes is known among his contemporaries for having views as to the practice of the art of painting. This book thus makes no attempt at being an inclusive compilation of ideas already easily obtainable elsewhere, but embodies a personal contribution of two kinds. ARGUMENTATIVELY it is designed to rehabilitate eclecticism—not the Old Eclecticism which aimed at combining every virtue in a single work of art, but a New Eclecticism which holds that there is hardly any quality in painting which may not sometimes be a virtue—hardly any but may become a vice. DIDACTICALLY it suggests a basis of elementary education in painting other than that done from Nature to meet the call for inventive design made upon the Decorator. In both departments the approach is leisurely, the author evidently confessing to the old Victorian ideal of amusement combined with instruction. --- By R. P.
