THE STUDIO INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. REVISED RULES. (1) All subscribers to THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only. The Coupon given on p. xvi., with details fully filled in, must accompany each drawing or set of drawings, and must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. As this envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made, any inquiry should be forwarded in a separate letter. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes, provided that, in the unanimous opinion of the judges, the drawings do not fulfil the rules of the Competition, or otherwise are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO any of the designs submitted. All prize designs become the property of the Proprietor of THE STUDIO, unless otherwise specified. (5) No design will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. The term "sufficient postage" has been fixed at a minimum of sixpence, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. (6) All designs must be sent in packed flat, unless specially excepted in certain competitions. (7) All designs and correspondence thereon to be addressed THE STUDIO, 44, Leicester Square, London, W.C., and marked "Prize Competitions," with the number of the Competition, "A xxx," "B xxiii," "C xxxii," &c., on the outside of the package or letter referring to it. The design must be suitable for execution in metal, or in metal and enamels. Drawings, which are to be made full-size, may be carried out in water-colours, monochrome wash, or pen-and-ink. DESIGN FOR CLOTH BINDING OF AN ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF SHAKESPEARE'S WORKS. Drawings to be made in the actual size and in the colours in which the design is intended to be reproduced. The size of the board will be $ \frac{9}{4} $ inches high by $ \frac{6}{3} $ inches wide. The back the same height as the side design and $ \frac{1}{2} $ inches in width. Not more than three colours and gold should be used. Lettering or space for it will be required on the back for title, number of volume, and plays contained. The competitor may at his option include lettering in the side design, or space may be left for it. Preference will be given to designs showing originality of treatment, and to those which can most easily be reproduced for blocking stamps, and in which the number of workings is limited. FIRST PRIZE, Five Guineas; SECOND PRIZE, Three Guineas. The successful designs will become the property of the firm offering the prizes, for whom also the Editor reserves the right to purchase any of the other designs sent in at One Guinea each.
