THE STUDIO INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS. Preliminary Announcement. In order to make the STUDIO competitions still more useful and practical, the Editor has decided to introduce a New Series, which it is hoped will not only be of great advantage to competitors, but will also help to encourage the production of articles to which the appellation of “artistic” may be applied with all justice. This New Series has for its main object the encouragement of the designer who is also the craftsman. The highest artistic decorative work can only be produced when the designer and worker are one and the same person, and it is desirable that the fullest encouragement shall be given to those who combine in themselves the necessary qualifications. In pursuance of this idea, first, second and third prize medals will be awarded by the Editor of THE STUDIO in each of the following classes of design and workmanship:— 1. Gold and Silver Jewellery, with or without precious stones or enamel. 2. Silver Plate. 3. Brass and Copper Repoussé and Chased Work. 4. Wrought Iron Work. 5. Furniture, plain, or decorated by inlay, carving or other methods. 6. Carved Wood Panelling. 7. Stained Glass. 8. Gesso Work. 9. Woven Fabrics. 10. Embroidered and Worked Fabrics. 11. Stencilled Work. 12. Mosaic. 13. Bookbinding. 14. Enamelling. 15. Pottery Painting. 16. Illumination. 17. Wood Engraving. 18. Medallions. 19. Statuettes in clay, ivory, marble or bronze, not over 18 inches high. 20. Door-knockers and other fittings in cast-bronze. In all cases more than one object may be submitted by each exhibitor. The objects intended for competition in all these various sections must be delivered in London in the spring of 1901 (date and other particulars will be announced in a later number of THE STUDIO). Those whose applications are favourably entertained will be required to attend the College, to work for six days, on Monday, 4th February. Applicants who are successful in this further test will be registered as students of the Royal College of Art. The fee for the term, which terminates at the end of the first week in July, is £12 10s.
