Westminster Gazette: Nobody who had read and marked Sir Charles Holmes's book would be at a loss to see why John Sell Cotman, admirably introduced by Mr. A. P. Oppé, is coming into his own. It is precisely because he had in so superlatively high degree the power of extracting the rhythm from natural appearances without losing their significance—and the twenty-four illustrations in colour, "New Bridge, Durin", in that particular connection, in this handsome volume—would make the process clear. AT THE BRITISH EMPIRE GAS EXHIBIT AT WEMBLEY there is a series of modern and period rooms showing gas fires and gas lighting fittings which, while embodying the latest principles of efficiency and hygiene, are designed to harmonise with the furnishing. The lighting is controlled by pneumatic distant switches. The room illustrated above (designed for the British Empire Gas Exhibit by Messrs. Osborne and Company, of Grafton Street) is an example of the work of William Kent, circa 1740. The colouring of the room is blue with the shell and flower mouldings and the elaborate cornice, dado rail and skirting picked out in dull silver— a splendid setting for the radiant gas fire in its antique silvered metal frame. The chief pieces of furniture seen are a Queen Anne walnut chest with four drawers, made about 1710, a William and Mary style armchair in old red brocette and a small Jacobean table with turned legs & stretchers, circa 1680.
