'THE STUDIO' INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. REVISED RULES. (1) All subscribers to THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only. The Coupon given on p. xxx, with details fully filled in, must accompany each drawing or set of drawings, and must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. As this envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made, any inquiry should be forwarded in a separate letter. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes, provided that, in the unanimous opinion of the judges, the drawings do not fulfil the rules of the Competition, or otherwise are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO any of the designs submitted. All prize designs become the property of the Proprietor of THE STUDIO, unless otherwise specified. (5) No design will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. The term “sufficient postage” has been fixed at a minimum of sixpence, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. (6) All designs must be sent in packed flat, unless specially excepted in certain competitions. (7) All designs and correspondence thereon to be addressed THE STUDIO, 44 Leicester Square, London, W.C., and marked “Prize Competitions,” with the number of the Competition, “A IX,” “B VII,” “C VII,” &c., on the outside of the package or letter referring to it. The design required is for a small decorative book-label for indicating the ownership of a book. Instead of following the usual lines of a book-plate, in which the full name is given, the design in this case must embody the words “Ex Libris” and a cypher or monogram of the owner’s initials. Designs, which must be in pen and ink on white cardboard, to be made suitable for reduction to about 1½ inch by 2 inches. FIRST PRIZE: Two Guineas; SECOND PRIZE, One Guinea. Drawings to be received at the London office of THE STUDIO by September 1. CLASS C. PHOTOGRAPHS FROM NATURE. C ix. SPRING LANDSCAPE. C x. DOMESTIC INTERIOR WITH FIGURES. C xi. SUMMER LANDSCAPE. C xii. STUDY OF REFLECTIONS IN WATER. All photographs should be sent in mounted upon firm cards, with a margin not exceeding half-an-inch in depth. Photographs to be received at the London office of THE STUDIO, 44 Leicester Square, W.C., by June 1 for C ix, July 1 for C x, August 1 for C xi, and September 1 for C xii. --- IMPORTANT COMPETITION. THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF FAN MAKERS (Joseph Ettlinger, Esq., Master; the Hon. Mr. Justice Bucknill, Free Warden; and Mr. Alderman Morris, Foreign Warden), having arranged a prize Competition in conjunction with the Proprietor of THE STUDIO, now offer Prizes to the amount of £50 (divided as follows: First Prize, £20; Second Prize, £12; Third Prize, £8; and two additional Prizes of £5 each) for the best Fan Leaves and Fan Designs. The Proprietor of THE STUDIO, who will be one of the Judges, has consented to reproduce Prize Leaves and Designs in his magazine. RULES. 1. British Subjects only are eligible to compete for the Prizes offered by the Fan Makers’ Company. 2. Paintings and Designs must be original (not copies), workable, and adapted to the usual sizes and mountings of folding-fans. 3. Leaves.—Any pliable material which can be conveniently folded and mounted on fan sticks (such as paper, specially dressed gauze, silk or leather) may be used for Fan Leaves ready for mounting. 4. Designs for ans or fan leaves may be worked on any material, but should clearly and accurately show how they are intended to be carried out. The Leaves and Designs will be divided into five classes and our subdivisions, viz.: A. Figure Painting.—Subdivision (a). Design for figure painting. B. Painting of Flowers, Leaves, Birds, Butterflies, or any other ornaments.—(b.) Design for ditto. C. Lace Work. Embroidery (Spangles or Silk Work).—(c.) Design for ditto. D. A combination of two or three classes, A, B, C.—(d.) Design for a combination of subdivisions (a), (b), (c). E. Design for a Feather Fan. 5. All Prize Leaves and Designs with their copyright to become the property of the Fan Makers’ Company. Others will be returned at the expense of their senders, and in their cases or wrappers. 6. The Fan Makers’ Company reserve to themselves the right of withholding all or any of the prizes if, in the unanimous opinion of the Judges, the Leaves and Designs submitted do not fulfil the rules of the Competition, or otherwise are of insufficient merit. 7. In awarding the prizes the Judges will endeavour to divide them amongst the five classes and four subdivisions, but they will not be bound to do so. 8. In Class B and subdivision (b), two or more competitors may combine their work on one Leaf or one Design, and share the prizes if any be awarded for such Leaf or Design. 9. No Design will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. With most piano-players it is possible to play with correct technique, and in some cases the performer is allowed a certain amount of control over expression.
