TURNER’S WATER-COLOURS AT FARNLEY HALL
WITH THIRTY PLATES IN FACSIMILE COLOURS
COMPLETE IN SIX PARTS
PRICE 26 PER PART
TURNER’S position among English Artists is as pre-eminent and unchallenged as that of Shakespeare among our poets and dramatists. Turner’s work not only appeals to the artist and cultivated amateur, but the great English-speaking public all over the world appreciates and finds happiness in the marvellous stream of oil paintings and water-colours that he produced during his long and industrious life.
¶ The water-colours which came into the possession of the nation after his death consist mainly of slight drawings and unfinished sketches and studies. The finished drawings upon which Turner lavished all his genius and care must be sought in private collections. By far the largest and most important private collection of his water-colours is that at Farnley Hall. It contains nearly 200 highly finished and exquisitely wrought drawings. But this collection is not only remarkable for its size; it has a special character of its own. It was formed by Mr. Walter Fawkes, of Farnley Hall, between the years 1808 and 1826—the years of Turner’s freshest and happiest inspiration. All the drawings were bought direct from the artist or were specially commissioned by Mr. Fawkes. They therefore bear the stamp of their first owner’s tastes and sympathies—his passionate love of his home and the beautiful scenery of Wharfedale in which it stands, his interest in the grandest scenery of Switzerland and the romantic castles which crown the banks of the Rhine, and, above all, his pride in the hardihood and courage of the seamen who guard our native shores. The collection shows us exactly what scenes and incidents a cultivated English gentleman of that period found delight in contemplating—a fact which gives it a certain homogeneous and unique character.
¶ In order to make these marvellous drawings of Turner more widely known and enjoyed, the present owner of Farnley Hall, Mr. F. H. Fawkes, has very generously placed the entire collection at the disposal of the Editor of THE STUDIO for the purpose of reproducing a number of the finest water-colours in facsimile direct from the originals. Most of these have never before been reproduced. These will be published in six parts (each containing five plates) at the moderate price of half-a-crown a part. Mr. Alexander J. Finberg, the well-known authority on Turner’s life and work, will be responsible for the letterpress, which will include the first full and authoritative account of Turner’s relations with Farnley Hall, and a detailed description and history of the collection.
¶ The size of each plate will be about $10 \times 7\frac{1}{2}$ inches (nearly twice the size of the special colour plates in THE STUDIO) and the mounts will measure $16 \times 14$ inches. The first part will be ready about the end of March, and as there is certain to be a great demand for this unique and beautiful work, orders should be placed without delay.
¶ Price: Per Part, 2s 6d net (postage extra: Inland, 6d; Abroad, 1s to 1s 6d). Complete set of Six Parts, 15s net (postage extra: Inland, 3s; Abroad, 6s). This work may be obtained from any Bookseller or direct from THE STUDIO Office, 44 Leicester Square, London, W.C.
