RULES OF "THE STUDIO" INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. (1) All purchasers of THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs and Compositions must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings, &c., submitted for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only, and must be accompanied by the Coupon given on p. xxxvi, duly filled in and signed. Such coupon must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. This envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes if the rules of the Competition have not been complied with, or if in the opinion of the judges the drawings, &c., are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO, or any Extra Number of it, at such a time as he thinks fit, any of the drawings, designs, photographs and other works submitted. Subject to this, the copyright in such drawings, &c., belongs (unless otherwise stated or implied in the announcement) to the competitors sending them, and they are free to dispose of them as they like. (5) All Drawings, &c., including those to which prizes have been awarded (unless otherwise stated), will be returned to Competitors at their own risk as soon as possible after publication of the awards, provided sufficient stamps are sent in the envelope containing the coupon to cover postage or carriage and packing—the minimum in all cases being sixpence. Competitors resident abroad should send Postage Coupons, but stamps will be accepted. (6) All drawings, prints, &c., must be claimed within one month after the publication of the awards (except those sent from remote countries, for which a period of four months will be allowed), failing which they may be disposed of as the Proprietor of THE STUDIO thinks fit. He will under no circumstances hold himself responsible for the loss or damage of any drawings, photographs, &c., in whatever way such loss or damage may arise. (7) All drawings, &c., must be sent in packed flat, except where otherwise expressly stated. (8) All designs, drawings, prints, &c., and correspondence thereto to be addressed THE STUDIO, 44 Leicester Square, London, W.C., and marked "Prize Competitions," with the number of the Competition on the outside of the package or letter referring to it. (9) An infringement of any of the above Rules will disqualify a Competitor, and the decision of the Editor shall be final on all questions arising thereunder. Closes Feb. 1 CLASS A. DECORATIVE ART. A v. DESIGNS FOR MOSAIC PANELS. The Borough Council of Southwark offers two prizes of Five Guineas each for the two designs adjudged most suitable for two panels to be executed in glass mosaic commemorative Chaucer's connection with that Borough; the panels are intended to be placed in two external spaces, each approximately $3' 6"$ (three feet six inches) in width and $7' 3"$ (seven feet three inches) in height, provided for them on either side of the staircase bay of the new Branch Library at the corner of Old and New Kent Roads, Southwark, as indicated by crosses on the accompanying illustration. The style of the work must be in harmony with that of the building; the subjects of the panels may be selected by the competitor, but with the above-mentioned object in view (the large leaded windows above portray the Canterbury Pilgrims on their journey). Drawings for one or both panels in colour to scale of one-fourth full size (three inches on the foot) are to be delivered flat at the London Office of THE STUDIO by 10 a.m. on Monday, February 1st, 1909. They will be assessed by the Editor of THE STUDIO and the Architect of the Library (Mr. Claude Batley, A.R.I.B.A.). The winning designs to become the property of the Council, and their authors must undertake, should the Council so desire, to prepare full-size cartoons of their designs to the satisfaction of the assessors, for which the Council will pay a further sum of Five Guineas for each panel. A vi. DESIGN FOR A CHOCOLATE BOX LABEL. Messrs. H. J. Packer & Co., Ltd., of Greenbank, Bristol, offer a prize of Five Guineas for the best design suitable for reproduction as a label for Chocolate boxes. The style and composition of the design are left to the discretion of competitors, subject to the following conditions being complied with:—(1) The design to consist of a lid label reproducible in size 11 inches by 8 inches and a front label reproducible 11 inches by $2\frac{1}{2}$ inches (the drawings need not, of course, be of these dimensions, but must be proportionate); (2) the design must be capable of effective reproduction by lithography in not more than eight printings; and (3) the design for both lid and front labels must include the words "Conquest's Cordelia Chocolates." The designs submitted will be judged by a nominee of Messrs. H. J. Packer & Co., Ltd., in conjunction with the Editor of THE STUDIO, and the design to which the prize is awarded will become the absolute property of Messrs. Packer & Co., who also reserve the right to purchase any other design submitted for the sum of Three Guineas.
