The design is required for a bracket-sign, and must be made suitable for execution in wrought-iron and embossed copper. The design, which must not be heraldic, should embody the letters "N. & G." either as a monogram or otherwise. Drawings may be made in either line or monochrome-wash, at the option of the Competitor, but a simple yet striking and practicable design will be preferred. The design required is for an Axminster carpet in the severe decorative style. Ten to twelve whole colours may be introduced. PRIZE: Twenty Pounds. Drawings, packed flat, to be received at the London Office OF THE STUDIO by December 1. Closes Dec. 1. A. xxiii. DESIGN FOR AN AXMINSTER CARPET IN THE FLORAL STYLE. Ten to sixteen colours may be introduced, five or six of which may be "planted."* PRIZE: Twenty Pounds. Drawings, packed flat, to be received at the London Office OF THE STUDIO by December 1. In each of the above Competitions (A. xx., A. xxi., A. xxii. and A. xxiii.) the design is to be executed in colours, upon stout white paper, and to be drawn full-size. The width of the design in each case to be 27 inches, and the length of the repeat not less than 18 inches, and not more than 54 inches. The design may either "drop" or "straight match." It must be technically workable. In judging the designs special consideration will be given to effective and appropriate colourings. Each competitor may send in as many designs as he wishes for each class, but each drawing must be distinctly marked with the number of the Competition and with the Competitor's pseudonym. The Prize Designs in each Competition shall become the property of the donors of the prizes, who are also open to purchase a certain number of the unsuccessful designs at prices to be agreed upon hereafter. *NOTE.—A "straight match" pattern is one in which two identical breadths laid side by side will match exactly straight across. In a "drop" pattern the breadths will match when the beginning of the repeat in one is placed by the middle of the repeat in the other. "Planting" or "shading" means the division of a whole colour into different shades, or into bands of different colours running side by side in the length of the design. “WEEKLY TELEGRAPH” DESIGN COMPETITION. The Proprietors of the Weekly Telegraph (Sheffield, and 181 Fleet Street, London) offer a Prize of TEN GUINEAS for a suitable Title-page Design for the paper mentioned. The design must be in black and white and appropriate to the style of journal for which it is intended. The cover of the paper will be canary yellow. Space available for design: across the top to a depth of three inches, down the side to the extent of nine inches (including headpiece), and three inches in width. Designs occupying slightly less space will not be disqualified, but on no account should they be of a disproportionately larger size. Unsuccessful drawings will be returned when stamped addressed envelopes are enclosed for the purpose. All competitive designs should reach the office of the Weekly Telegraph, Sheffield, not later than Wednesday, August 10, and should be marked on the wrapper or envelope, “Title Design.” The name and address of the competitor should be written on the back of each drawing.
