THE STUDIO INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS NEW SERIES These Competitions are set for the purpose of introducing to manufacturers, publishers, and others, the work of young draughtsmen and designers who otherwise have few opportunities of bringing their drawings before the notice of the buying public. Many who have competed in the First Series are now well and profitably employed; and this desirable result has been largely attained through the publicity given to their work in the pages of THE STUDIO. The Rules have been re-framed with a view to meet the wishes of many competitors residing in various parts of the world who desire an extended time for the preparation and sending in of their drawings. In addition to the money prizes which are given with each competition, the proprietor of THE STUDIO will present at the end of each year one Gold, one Silver, and one or more Bronze Medals in each class to those designers who, by the excellence of their collective work in the respective classes, shall be deemed most worthy of the honours. Each competitor will be eligible for awards in all the classes. It is intended to hold an Annual Exhibition of Selected Drawings entered for these Competitions. Particulars of the First Exhibition will be shortly announced. REVISED RULES (1) All subscribers to THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment combined with workable detail and arrangement will be the objects considered. (3) Drawings for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only. The form page AD. IX. with details fully filled in, must accompany each drawing or set of drawings, and must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. As this envelope will not be opened until after the awards are made, any inquiry should be forwarded in a separate letter. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes, provided that, in the unanimous opinion of the judges, the drawings do not fulfil the rules of the Competition or otherwise are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO any of the designs submitted. (5) No design will be returned in any case unless accompanied by sufficient stamps for postage or carriage and packing. The term sufficient postage has been fixed at a minimum of sixpence, to cover the cost of packing, &c., unless otherwise indicated. (6) All designs (unless specially excepted in certain competitions) must be sent rolled, not packed flat. Competitors are advised to forward their drawings within cardboard cylinders (to be obtained of most stationers) or upon wooden rollers, as by this means the drawings are not liable to damage in transit, and the trouble of repacking is greatly reduced, (7) All designs and correspondence thereon to be addressed THE STUDIO, 5 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London, W.C., and marked "Prize Competitions," with the number of the Competition, "A xix," "B xii," "C xi," "D ii," &c., on the outside of the package, or letter referring to it. (8) An infringement of any of the above Rules will disqualify a competitor. CLASS A.—INDUSTRIAL DESIGNS. (In this Section all the varied forms of Decorative Art will in turn receive attention. Designs for Amateur work will in future be included in this Section.) A I. DESIGN FOR A MEDALLION TO COMMEMORATE THE REIGN OF QUEEN VICTORIA. The drawing should be made upon a much larger scale than that intended for its reproduction. Either pen and ink or monochrome wash may be employed. Both obverse and reverse of the medallion must be shown. It is unnecessary that the circular shape should be exclusively adopted; and the raised rim, necessary to coinage, may be omitted. FIRST PRIZE: Three guineas. SECOND PRIZE: Two guineas. Should any design be actually carried out a further five guineas will be paid to the designer. Designs must be received at the London Office of THE STUDIO by May 1. CLASS B.—DRAWINGS FOR BOOK ILLUSTRATION. (In this Section will also be included Designs for the Decoration of Books.) B I. ILLUSTRATION IN PEN AND INK WORK FOR "THE CANTERBURY TALES." The passage selected for illustration is from "The Knight's Tale." "Her yellow hair was braided in a tress, Behind her back, a full yard long, I guess, And in the garden, as the sun uprose, She walketh up and down, and, as she chose, She gathered flowers—partly white and red— To make a fine-woven garland for her head; And, as an angel's, heavenly was her song."
