RULES OF “THE STUDIO” INTERNATIONAL PRIZE COMPETITIONS. (1) All purchasers of THE STUDIO are eligible to compete. (2) Designs and Compositions must be original and not traceable to any existing pattern. New ideas and new treatment, combined with workable detail and arrangement, will be the features considered by the judges. (3) Drawings, &c., submitted for competition must be legibly signed with pseudonym only, and must be accompanied by the Coupon given below, duly filled in and signed. Such coupon must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, on the outside of which is written only the pseudonym of the competitor. This envelope will not be opened until after the awards have been made. (4) The Proprietor of THE STUDIO reserves to himself the right of withholding all or any of the prizes if the rules of the Competition have not been complied with, or if in the opinion of the judges the drawings, &c., are of insufficient merit. He also reserves to himself the right to reproduce in THE STUDIO, or any Extra Number of it, at such a time as he thinks fit, any of the drawings, designs, photographs and other works submitted. Subject to this, the copyright in such drawings, &c., belongs (unless otherwise stated or implied in the announcement) to the competitors sending them, and they are free to dispose of them as they like. (5) All Drawings, &c., including those to which prizes have been awarded (unless otherwise stated), will be returned to Competitors at their own risk as soon as possible after publication of the awards, provided sufficient stamps are sent in the envelope containing the coupon to cover postage or carriage and packing—the minimum in all cases being sixpence. Competitors resident abroad should send Postage Coupons, but stamps will be accepted. (6) All drawings, prints, &c., must be claimed within one month after the publication of the awards (except those sent from remote countries, for which a period of four months will be allowed), failing which they may be disposed of as the Proprietor of THE STUDIO thinks fit. He will under no circumstances hold himself responsible for the loss or damage of any drawings, photographs, &c., in whatever way such loss or damage may arise. (7) All drawings, &c., must be sent in packed flat, except where otherwise expressly stated. (8) All designs, drawings, prints, &c., and correspondence thereon to be addressed THE STUDIO, 44 Leicester Square, London, W.C., and marked “Prize Competitions,” with the number of the Competition on the outside of the package or letter referring to it. Winter Number of “The Studio” (1908-9), Ready shortly. The Gardens of England In the Midland and Eastern Counties. The Special Winter Number of “The Studio” will form a companion volume to the Winter Number of 1907-8, which was devoted to gardens in the Southern and Western Counties. The forthcoming number will, however, prove even more attractive, for the reason that the Midland and Eastern Counties contain some of the finest and most interesting gardens in the kingdom. In selecting the illustrations especial attention has been given to features and details which will prove of the utmost value to those who are designing or re-arranging gardens of more modest dimensions. But your paper gives me the assurance that I miss nothing which would be of use to me in the train of thought upon which I may just be engaged, and seldom does a weekly issue of PUBLIC OPINION appear from which I cannot call some useful suggestion. As a lecturer on art, I need all the suggestions on life that I can get into my hands, for I treat art in all its phases popularly. From PUBLIC OPINION I get to know certain modern authors with whose methods of thinking I am in sympathy, and those I follow up further. Your paper does me the service to point to them. Your selection of current thought is worthy of all praise, for it gives one the wholesome feeling that the world is after all, not going to the devil, but contains thinkers and good men and women.
